It’s been a busy three weeks for Team Spur en route to the UCI XCO and XCM World Championships, which take place in Switzerland and Italy, respectively. Team Spur enjoyed a dream weekend a fortnight ago, when Ariane Lüthi and Alan Hatherly claimed impressive victories on opposite sides of the Atlantic.
On Sunday, 12 August Ariane put in a powerful ride in her hometown marathon, the legendary Eiger Bike Challenge in Switzerland, to claim victory over Swiss countrywoman and former World Champion Esther Süss. The 88km route was a brutal test of mental and physical strength as Ariane and Esther slogged it out over almost 4000m of Alpine climbing.
Alan was up a few hours later the same day at the UCI XCO World Cup in Mont Sainte-Anne, Canada, putting his technical skill and his growing tactical awareness to earn his maiden U23 World Cup victory.
A week later Ariane won the four-day Carpathian Mountain Bike Epic in Romania overall with a thrilling come-from-behind victory on the final stage. Most recently, Alan wrapped up his World Cup season with an impressive 19th place at the final round of the series on a very wet and slippery La Bresse course in France three days ago. Alan fought back from an early mechanical, moving from 35th into the top 20 and posting the fastest U23 lap time in the process.
Alan will spend this week in Livigno, Italy, prepping for the UCI U23 World Championships, which take place in Lenzerheide, Switzerland from 5-9 September. Alan will be on the start line in the U23 race on 7 September.
Meanwhile, Ariane continues to prepare at home in Switzerland for the XCM World Championships in Auronzo, in Italy’s spectacular Dolomite mountain ranges on 15 September. Alan and Team Spur will join her for the Marathon World Champs.
Both Team Spur athletes are in superb form for their biggest target races of the 2018 season – the World Championships. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank you, our fans, for the continued support which allows the team to take on the world.
We share your pride in watching Team Spur fly!
