A few weeks ago I received an email from Erik Kleinhans asking if I’d like to attend Canyon’s launch onto the South African market. The excitement started to build, even way back then, 3 weeks before the event. Was I disappointed? Absolutely not! It was something special to meet some of the Canyon team members, and witness their drive for building the best bike brand out there!
The date: 24 October 2018. The venue: Mont Marie (Stellenbosch). While the heat that day was a total scorcher, nothing would dry my spirits up, as I strolled over and shook hands with the Lion King himself (A.K.A Erik Kleinhans). The mountain back-drop and vast country side, treasured some fantastic single-track – which we shred the test mountain bikes upon.
The whole day was centred around giving us the opportunity to ride some new Canyon bike models. An entire test fleet, along with prized bikes scattered here and there, awaited me. First up, Frans (from Full-Sus) and myself piloted the 2019 Canyon Lux along that single-track I mention earlier. Then, the Grail gravel-grinder was a must ride. Last, but not least (more beast actually) the new Spectral! Which was an absolute joy ride as a matter of fact. You’ll be able to read more about these test rides soon!
The Canyon Buying Philosophy
If you think about it, buying your bike online is a lot easier and safer. It’s no doubt that Canyon is sticking to their guns when it comes to this. The brand prides themselves in being able to control what happens to your bike after you’ve bought it online. They can see exactly where the frame has been, what testing it has received etc… Then, Canyon deliver your bike to your door-step, ensuring its secure all the way.
With this system, South African’s now have local support. Erik Kleinhans will market the brand here in the country, and have a support crew to handle customer service. So if you have a problem with your Canyon bike, they’ll be able to assist! Fast and efficiently!
Final Hours:
After some bike banter, beers, and a shower, it was time to have the evening braai. I was able to chat and meet some great people, as well as experience good vibes from the Canyon dudes. At the end of the day, I walked away convinced by people, and by bicycle innovation, that this will be a good venture for Canyon Bikes!
