Action Cycles get a revamp ahead of 2020

On Thursday 28 November 2019 the Port Elizabeth cycling community gathered at Action Cycles, 97 Heugh Road to celebrate the relaunch of the store after a complete makeover including a massive reconstruction of the property.

Action Cycles was founded in 1985, and has been run by partner Garth Botha from the beginning. Garth’s relationship with Specialized started twelve years ago, in 2007, and has grown from strength to strength over the years. Two years ago Dave McEwan bought into the business and the two have been working together to take the cycling industry in Port Elizabeth to a whole new level. They aim to offer the best service and advice to their customers and own the title “number one bike shop in Port Elizabeth”.

The store has been operating out of the current premises for 25 years but June this year marked the beginning of the first major renovation to the property to the point that the building’s roof was removed and just two boundary walls were left standing. The store space has been completely opened up to create a comfortable shopping environment for customers. The Grind coffee shop will ensure customers can get their caffeine fix while browsing, and an awesome kid’s track will keep future shredders happy.

In addition there is a Retül Fit room, equipped with a state-of-the art Retül Vantage 3D motion capture fit system, to make sure you are perfectly set up on your bike. Most importantly, the spacious workshop is perfectly laid out to give your bicycle the care it deserves.

The team pride themselves on offering customers a world class shopping experience with a family feel, and many of the staff have grown with the store over the years. “Welcome” the head mechanic has been with the store for 18 years, and is one of best technicians in the country.

Port Elizabeth is one of the major sea ports in South Africa and has been home to Ironman South Africa for many years. Triathlon is therefore core to the city’s cycling culture and the new store has a dedicated triathlon section to accommodate and welcome triathletes. Since both Dave and Garth have completed Ironman they are well equipped to offer advice and assistance to beginner and advanced competitors alike.

Mountain bike stage races like Trans-Baviaans, PE to Plett and the Great Zuurberg Trek also attract riders from around the country to the area, and the Herald Cycle Tour is a highlight on the South African road race calendar. Action Cycles is perfectly positioned to assist both the ever-growing local cycling community and riders visiting the Eastern Cape, whether racing or just enjoying a holiday on what is aptly named the Sunshine Coast.

If you are passing through the area pop in for a coffee and a chat with Garth, Dave and their friendly team. The store is open from 08:00 to 17:30 during the week and from 09:00 to 13:00 on Saturdays.
